Hamlet in the Park

Block Print Illustration + Branding + Marketing Campaign

For this project I was to select a real event in the KC metro area and design marketing materials based on a traditional illustration in my medium of choice. I chose a Shakespeare in the Park performance of Hamlet, and block printing.

Process

I ended up crafting a block print design inspired by classic tarot cards that included references to major story elements. The king’s throne and his ghost to represent the conceit of the play, the skull from the most iconic monologue, the poison filled goblet and poison tipped sword from the end of the play, and the V to represent the theme of revenge.

I was inspired by the original 1909 Ryder-Waite Tarot, ink illustrated by Pamela Coleman Smith.

Some of my ideation most that most influenced my final design choices.

Process

Here you can see my process as I progressed from sketching to a clean digital drawing which I graphite transferred to my linoleum cutting block. The middle image shows the finished block, and the right image shows the scanned block print in black ink.
